Excerpt of information received from UC Banking Services:

Greek banks are closed and will stay shut for the week, after the country’s debt crisis took a dramatic turn. Banks will remain closed until at least Monday, July 6, the day after the referendum. For campuses who have faculty, students or staff in Greece, the big issue will be access to EUR cash.

Key points:

  • U.S. issued bank cards, whether debit or credit, should not be affected and tourists/travelers should be able to withdraw the full amounts allowed by their U.S. banks.
  • For monies on deposit in Greek bank accounts, withdrawals are limited to 60 EUR per day from ATMs.
  • In order to send remittances outside of Greece from a Greek bank account for emergencies, funding family member needs, etc., the Greek Treasury has created a banking transaction approval committee that will examine each request on a case by case basis.
  • Greek bank issued credit/debit card transactions within the country will not be limited. In practice, however, many retailers were already not accepting Greek bank card transactions as of Monday morning, and were demanding cash payments only.
